Glossary

TERM

DEFINITION

EXAMPLE

Version

An individual audio recording covering the tune. Each version gets assigned a unique number in the database upon officially entering the collection

"This is a version I've never come across before"

Greensleeves

The melody or music of Greensleeves. Can also be used to refer to a version, the plural being Greensleeveses (which is fun to say aloud)

"I'm going to see if I can find a Greensleeves in this music store"

Greensleevesing

The act of working on this project

"I spent a lot of time Greensleevesing this weekend"

Greensleeves Title

The unique title designated to a version in the collection, always starting with "Greensleeves ". Used as the version's descriptive identity in the context of the collection as a whole, whether it's artist/album name, subgenre, or other noteworthy factor

"I gave this one the title of 'Greensleeves Avenging Battle'"

Original Title

The title that the artist used in the original release of a version

"This instrumental medley was originally titled What Child Is This / Hava Nagila"

Shortsleeves

A short version of Greensleeves, 1:30 or less. Often experimental or from a media clip

"'Greensleeves Lassie (March)' is one of my favorite shortsleeves"

Longsleeves

A long version of Greensleeves, 8:00 or more. Often experimental or free jazz in nature

"John Coltrane is the undisputed king of the Longsleeves"

Variant

An alternative version of the tune, either by lyrics (What Child is This) or melody

"This version features an uncommon Greensleeves variant"

Arrangement

The instrumentation and song form that an artist uses when covering the tune. Most versions use original arrangements, but some clearly influence other versions

"Classical versions often use the tried-and-true 'Fantasia on Greensleeves' arrangement by Ralph Vaughan Williams"

Dreamsleevesing

The act of dreaming about Greensleeves and trying to somehow collect a version while in a dream. This is usually done instinctually with a dream-phone and it never works

"I am the only person who dreamsleeves"

Hunting Grounds

Websites I've bookmarked where I can search for and uncover more Greensleeveses. Examples include video hosting sites, music blogs, archival databases, specialty fan sites, etc.

"I've found that TV Tropes makes for a good hunting ground for particularly obscure Greensleeveses in media"

Tracking List

The current list of versions that I am aware of but have not yet added to the collection. This works as an informational stepping stone before aquiring the audio

"I added a whole bunch of Greensleeveses to the tracking list today"
